Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Early-Career Geotechnical Engineer in our Columbia, Maryland office. This position will let you apply your academic knowledge to real-world situations on geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects involving site characterization; landfill design and construction; earth retaining structures; foundation design; dams and water containment structures; geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; numerical analysis of stability and deformation; and geohazard / earthquake characterization / mitigation. In addition to technical application, you will learn the business skills needed for a successful consulting career through internal training and mentorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Is this the right position to help you achieve your professional goals? Some of the key responsibilities for the position include:

  • Overseeing geotechnical and environmental field investigations, including drilling, sampling, and instrumentation installation, for the purposes of site characterization and monitoring;
  • Performing and reviewing engineering calculations, such as shallow and deep foundation design, slope stability, settlement, bearing capacity, seismic stability, seepage, and stormwater modelling;
  • Incorporating geosynthetics in geotechnical and environmental design applications;
  • Providing construction observations and contractor oversight during earthwork activities, geosynthetics installation, and construction of private and public projects;
  • Performing and/or supporting landfill design and permitting;
  • Evaluating the impact of earthquakes on the built environment;
  • Performing dam and levee evaluations;
  • Developing construction documents, plans, and specifications; and
  • Writing and reviewing engineering reports, memoranda, and proposals.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.  

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, geotechnical, geological engineering, or related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree in a Geotech related discipline. (preferred)
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (preferred)
  • Outstanding academic credentials and strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities. (preferred)
  • Strong oral and technical writing skills. (required)
  • Commitment to career development and growth. (required)
  • Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals and soil mechanics.
  • Prior internship or work experience in engineering consulting. (preferred)
  • Experience with geotechnical and engineering software such as AutoCAD, Surfer, HydroCAD, SLIDE, Settle3D; and/or PLAXIS. (preferred)
  • Experience with scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or Visual Basic). (preferred)
  • Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $64,485/year / Maximum Salary: $95,170/year (Columbia, MD)
