Overview

SiREM, an operating division of Geosyntec Consultants, is seeking an Environmental/Molecular Laboratory Technician to join our team in Knoxville, Tennessee. The technician will help with an array of laboratory services including molecular testing, treatability studies assessing treatment technologies, antimicrobial efficacy studies, and more. The technician is expected to provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all laboratory related activities being performed, and compile and review data for reports, while working cooperatively with other members of the laboratory team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Is this the right position to help you achieve your professional goals? Some of the key responsibilities for the position include:

  • Genomic DNA/RNA isolation from groundwater and soil samples;  
  • Quantitative PCR of isolated environmental DNA/RNA;
  • Environmental sample reception;
  • Groundwater sample preparation for molecular genetic analyses;
  • Preparation and assembly of environmental sampling kits requested by clients;
  • Data collection, input and analysis, including tables and figures;
  • Assist with report writing;
  • General laboratory duties including inventory, ordering supplies and housekeeping;
  • Complying with the correct procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations;
  • Working under ISO/IEC 17025 requirements;
  • Working under EPA’s Good Lab Practice Standards (GLPS);
  • Participate in the writing and reviewing of controlled documents such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, and methods;
  • Prepare chemical solutions according to standard procedures and protocols;
  • Provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all laboratory-related activities, as required;
  • Assist with laboratory chemical hygiene, sample testing, and treatability studies;
  • Follow instructions and interact with other lab and office staff;
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Management online policies and procedures;
  • Training: This position may require OSHA hazardous communication, first aid, or CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm.  
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the individual will work in the laboratory; the individual will be trained to work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals under safe controlled conditions wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves) and engineering controls (e.g., fume hoods, biological safety cabinets).  The individual is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is moderate.
  • Some fieldwork and overnight travel may be required from time to time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.

Education and Licensure

  • College diploma in biotechnology or related field. (required)
  • University undergraduate degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, environmental or chemical engineering, or biochemistry. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of directly applicable biology, microbiology, molecular biology, environmental engineering or chemistry including experimental set-up and operation experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment. (required)
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, and/or environmental science. (required)
  • Hands-on laboratory experience. (preferred)
  • Ability to read, understand, and use Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), standard operating procedures, task hazard analyses, and published methods. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Outstanding academic credentials and exceptional interpersonal, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. (required)
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skill. (required)
  • Experience with data input and analysis, including preparing tables and figures (proficiency with MS Office applications, including Excel). (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, reliable transportation, and satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
