Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Staff Scientist in our Long Beach, California office, as part of our water and natural resources practice.  The position will work on complex projects involving innovative urban stormwater management and natural surface water systems, including sustainable green infrastructure planning studies, stream restoration, surface water, watershed, and stormwater runoff monitoring, NPDES MS4 program support, construction site NPDES permitting support and inspections, & Clean Water Act regulatory support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation, interpretation, and implementation of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) for construction sites and industrial facilities.
  • Managing, evaluating, and summarizing monitoring data.
  • Reviewing state and federal regulations & permits pertaining to surface water.
  • Water quality monitoring.
  • Water quality data analysis.
  • Field investigations and construction site compliance support services.
  • Preparing erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Assisting with preparation of Clean Water Act Sections 10, 404, and 401 permit applications from the US Army Corps of Engineers and Coastal Use Permits from state regulatory agencies.
  • Conducting biological and ecological resource studies including wildlife habitat assessments, listed threatened and endangered species assessments, native and invasive vegetation surveys, and wetland mitigation monitoring.
  • Assisting with preparation of environmental documents for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) including environmental resource reports, Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).
  • Interacting with client representatives.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed. 

 

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources or other science, with emphasis on water resources or closely related discipline. (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same. (preferred)
  • Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner Certification.
  • Qualified SWPPP Practitioner/Developer Certification. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of direct environmental consulting experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required) 
  • Experience with the identification of common and rare plant and animal species and/or using dichotomous keys. (required)
  • Experience with digital field data collection tools such as GPS, ArcGIS Collector/Field Maps, Fulcrum, Survey 123. (required)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Regular fieldwork and overnight travel. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required) 
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to stormwater management. (preferred)
  • Experience with NPDES Phase I and Phase II MS4 permits (preferred)
  • Familiarity with water quality-related legislation. (preferred)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required. 

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

 

  • Minimum Salary: $68,990/year / Maximum Salary: $86,240/year (Long Beach)
