Geosyntec is currently seeking a Permitting and Compliance Specialist to join our firm’s growing Midwest Environmental Permitting and Planning Practice in Oak Brook, IL, the potential to work a hybrid schedule or remotely from your home-office is available at the discretion of the Company. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of experience providing environmental assessment and permitting services.  This position will collaborate heavily with our capital project development teams, as well as other core practices within the firm such as natural resource specialists, air and noise specialists, geologists, and civil engineers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and development of NEPA documents, including Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).
  • Conduct resource analysis and prepare technical reports related to NEPA compliance.
  • Project management and technical lead for NEPA projects from inception to completion, ensuring regulatory requirements are met.
  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary project teams, clients, and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate project delivery.
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze environmental data to support NEPA documentation.
  • Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies for environmental permitting and compliance.
  • Preparation of permit applications (e.g., Clean Water Act Sections 404, 408, and 401 permit applications).
  • Assist in the preparation for and participation in public meetings and hearings.
  • Communicate project details and environmental impacts to the public and stakeholders.
  • Develop well-written, clear, and concise environmental documents and reports.
  • Work directly with clients and develop additional business opportunities by delivering outstanding results, forming valued relationships and solving some of their more challenging issues. 
  • Understanding client needs and developing work scopes with input from Geosyntec client managers and teams to propose approaches, solutions and resources; and working on teams to prepare competitive proposals highlighting Geosyntec capabilities and experience. 

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Natural Sciences, Environmental Engineering or an aligned environmental discipline. (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same as mentioned above. (preferred)
  • Certifications or additional training or experience in NEPA and CEQA. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 7 years (8+ preferred) of consulting or industry experience in environmental planning, NEPA documentation, and compliance; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Thorough knowledge and experience working with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and agencies. (required) 
  • Demonstrated project experience with the DOE, USACE, and FERC. (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience leading NEPA projects and managing multidisciplinary teams. (required)
  • Proficiency in writing clear, concise, and comprehensive NEPA documents. (required)
  • Demonstrated local/regional visibility through involvement in professional associations or trade organizations. (preferred) 
  • Demonstrated success in the development and management of clients. (required) 
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to deliver projects on time and within budget. (required) 
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed. (required) 
  • Overnight travel may be required for meetings.
  • Regular field work and overnight travel. (required) 
  • Current OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER training and refreshers. (preferred) 
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required. 
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required) 

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $91,505/year / Maximum Salary: $166,535 /year (Oak Brook, IL)
