Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Early-Career Water Resources Engineer or Scientist in our Oak Brook, IL office. The position will have the opportunity to apply civil, environmental, and water resources engineering knowledge to address real-world water quality challenges. This position will work on projects related to National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDLs) and Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) as driven by Clean Water Act (CWA) requirements, and to develop experience related to watershed and instream water quality modeling, mixing zones, water quality and biota sampling, data analysis, and reporting, while also learning the essential business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams of colleagues, clients, and stakeholders on a wide variety of water resource projects;
  • Performing water quality and pollutant load modeling of watersheds, stream systems, and stormwater infrastructure;
  • Conducting mixing zone studies for rivers, lakes, and coastal areas;
  • Retrieving, organizing, and analyzing publicly available water quality data;
  • Performing surface water field investigations and stormwater inspections;
  • Maintaining monitoring equipment;
  • Managing, evaluating, and summarizing monitoring data;
  • Reviewing state and federal regulations & permits pertaining to surface water and
  • Preparing technical reports.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, water resources or civil engineering, natural resources science (e.g., agricultural, fisheries, biology, ecology, etc.). (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Prior internship experience in environmental consulting or at least 2 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and exprience. (preferred)
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork and travel. (required)
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R. (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. (required)
  • Proficiency in GIS tools such as ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Google Earth Pro etc. (required)
  • Prior experience with watershed or instream water quality modeling tools such as SWAT, HSPF, BASINS, WASP, QUAL2K, EFDC etc. (preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and problem-solving skills. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $52,135/year / Maximum Salary: $95,170 /year (Oak Brook, IL)
